The GLA has a statutory duty to incorporate sustainable development into its policies and programmes, as well as to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development in the UK. The Mayor also produces a regular State of the Environment Report and ensures that sustainability is fully integrated into the GLA's performance review process.
The Mayor established the London Sustainable Development Commission in Spring 2002. Our Director, Samantha Heath, is a member and former co-chair of the Commission. The Commission exists to advise on sustainability issues in London, challenging policy makers to promote a better quality of life for all Londoners, both now and in the future.
Therefore, the GLA's role is very much at a political, strategic policy level. The GLA cannot make London sustainable single-handedly and welcomes the establishment of London Sustainability Exchange to act as an independent, cross-sectoral organisation that can work alongside it, and with other partners, to pursue sustainable development objectives from a non-political perspective.
"If we can't make London and similar world cities sustainable, then what hope do we have? Over half the world's population now lives in towns or cities. We are rapidly transforming ourselves into an urban species. There will be no sustainable world without sustainable cities."
Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London, on the launch of London Sustainability Exchange.
