LSx Chair
Martin Pilgrim worked in local government for over 38 years, to 2007. Most of his career was with local government representative bodies where he dealt with central government officials and Ministers, Parliament, the media and a wide range of other bodies at the most senior levels. His last role was Chief Executive of London Councils, a body which brings together London's 33 boroughs and provides a range of services to councils and to Londoners, including the Freedom Pass concessionary travel scheme and GBP26m pa grants to London's voluntary sector. While at London Councils, Martin dealt with matters as diverse as the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations, the creation of the Greater London Authority and the Mayor of London, London's security and resilience after 9/11, the 2012 Olympics, industrial relations and the multi-billion pound finances of London local government.
Martin now has a portfolio of activity, mainly in the 'not for profit' sector. He is a Trustee of the Prince's Trust and chairs the England Council and the London Regional Council of the Trust. He is Chair of the London Sustainability Exchange, an organisation which provides organisations and networks of individuals in London with the motivation, knowledge, and connections they need to put sustainability into practice. He is a Trustee and Honorary Treasurer of the Daycare Trust, the national childcare charity to promote high quality affordable childcare for all. He is a board member of Film London, the capital's film and media agency. Film London sustains, promotes and develops London as a major international film-making and film cultural capital. This includes all the screen industries based in London - film, television, video, commercials and new interactive media. Martin is an Associate of Criticaleye, a network of senior executives in the private and public sectors. He also undertakes occasional consultancy projects and in the past year he has worked with public affairs companies, financial services and the security industry.
Martin is a Chartered Public Finance Accountant and has a Master's degree in Management from the University of Kent.
