Welcome to our September / October bulletin. We recently celebrated our community 'champions' in a reception at the Guildhall Art Gallery in the City. Our diverse group of 'champions' act as vital messengers and mentors to help to embed greener living across all communities in the capital. We're very grateful to our key speakers on the evening who helped to make the event such a success. And our latest annual report is hot off the press so take a moment to read up on our projects and achievements in the last year. Read more below.

LSx community heroes event is big hit
Our celebration of London's community heroes at the Guildhall was a great success. LSx works with a wide range of dedicated community-based 'champions' who work to change behaviours through powerful 'peer to peer' methods. Speakers included Sir Simon Milton, the Mayor's planning and policy adviser, Merrick Cockell, leader of London Councils and Jennette Arnold, Chair of the London Assembly. And we also launched LSx's new annual report  as an independent charity for the first time. For more details contact Alasdair Tatam (020 7234 9413) / a.tatam@lsx.org.uk.

Restaurants manage waste together
Seven restaurants in Herne Hill have come together to collectively improve their waste management systems. This new ‘procurement hub’ aims to make business waste disposal easier, cheaper and more efficient. Led by delivery partner London Remade, Greener Food is supporting these businesses to identify a suitable recycling service provider who provides good value for money and meets their needs. Other Greener Food Hubs include the ‘Sustainable Packaging Hub’ and ‘Victoria Park Business Hub’. For more details contact Alasdair Tatam (020 7234 9413) / a.tatam@lsx.org.uk.

'Community feast' brings out the crowds

A ‘community feast’ in Tower Hamlets gave residents the chance to learn about healthy eating as well as meet other members of their community. Nearly a hundred people turned out to sample the delicious Indian & Somali dishes. There was also a salad competition for children, LSx's interactive ‘Eatwell’ game, henna decoration and hand massages. And many of those attending signed on for cook and eat courses as a result. The event was delivered with local partner Lansbury Lodge Women's Project in Hindgrove and is part of the Well London project.

Jobs and skills strategy for London
A new blueprint to boost jobs and increase skills opportunities for Londoners is now in place. London’s Future, the Skills and Employment Strategy was launched by Mayor Boris Johnson in July and sets out priorities for the next five years. The link between unemployment and crime forms a key part of the report. Nearly a third of Londoners do not work and over 600,000 have no qualifications. More

How to measure your event footprint
A new tool to help events organisers assess the total carbon footprint of their activities is available from Best Foot Forward (BFF) in September. The tool measures all aspects of the event including travel, food consumption as well as the ‘embodied’ carbon in equipment. It builds on lessons learned through BFF’s work with Radiohead.  More

Olympic waste will be cut says ODA
Ambitious targets have been set to cut waste in the construction of Olympic parks and venues. It is intended that an unprecedented 90% of the waste created through the construction of 2012 infrastructure will be recovered, reused or recycled says the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). And for the first time, the ODA has an integrated Environment and Sustainability Management System which has been externally approved and certified. More

Mayor launches climate change action plan
The Mayor has launched his plan to make sure London can cope with the impacts of climate change. The Climate Change Adaptation Strategy proposes ‘greening’ the city by improving London’s green spaces, encouraging Londoners to use less water and raising awareness of flood risk. It is hoped that these measures will go some way to protect against past and future carbon emissions. Boris has also appointed Isabel Dedring, a Director at Transport for London as his new environment lead. More
