High levels of air pollution, which are particularly prevalent in urban centres, are dangerous to all but particularly to children whose lungs are still developing. Research suggests that high levels of air pollution are known to affect children’s behaviour, birth outcome, cognitive development and cardiovascular effects.
Our Cleaner Air 4 Schools Programme frequently finds levels of air pollution that are more than double the legal limit around schools. The UK government must prioritise action that protects children from the harmful effects of air pollution.
LSx support ClientEarth and The British Lung Foundation in their call for a Clean Air for Children Programme. This would provide coordinated action by the UK Government to improve the air quality around schools and prevent new schools from being opened in areas of unsafe levels of pollution.
