The London Assembly’s Environment Committee has heard that many SMEs are motivated and enthusiastic about sustainability issues, but lack appropriate support and guidance.
The Assembly listened to a number of small enterprises experiencing difficulty is gaining access to environmental and sustainability information, for example, advice on how small businesses can recycle and reduce overall business waste.
Darren Johnson AM, Chair of the Environment Committee said: “Many London SMEs are clearly interested in managing their waste but councils are not doing enough to encourage and embrace this enthusiasm. London boroughs collect 1 million tonnes of commercial waste a year, but recycle only 6 percent. If we want to reduce business waste, councils and the London Development Agency must provide more support to SMEs to help them get a grip on recycling. Local businesses shouldn’t be out of pocket as a result of wanting to recycle".
