Why climate change matters
Climate change is the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today. Rising global temperatures will bring changes in weather patterns, rising sea levels and increased frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. More
The challenge for London
London is inherently vulnerable to climate change. It is exposed to far greater potential damage from flooding than any other urban area in the UK. London is the area of the UK predicted to experience the most climate change due to the urban heat island effect, which leads to additional rise in temperature.
Impacts of climate change on London
-
Increase summer elecricity demand
-
Reduce comfort in the city’s transport network- tube travel
-
Reduced air quality
-
Discomfort in city’s buildings
-
Risk of droughts
Impacts of climate change on South Asian countries
-
Over half of the 80 million people projected to be at risk of flooding are expected to be in South Asian countries (Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Myanmar)
- Draughts and flooding
- High winds and storm surges
- Rising sea levels
- Food shortages and the spread of diseases
-
Environmental refugees as a result of extreme weather patterns
Not too late to act
The solutions exist and it is not too late to make a difference. But we have to act now! Today! Everyone has a part to play.
Some action tips
-
Spread the word, talk to your friends and family about climate change
-
Reduce your room temperature by 1°C could cut your heating bills by up to 10 percent. You could save around £40 per year.
-
Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
-
Change one light bulb to an energy efficient one.
-
Don't leave appliances on standby and remember not to leave appliances on charge unnecessarily.
