Diverse London

LSx’s work to enable the capital's culturally diverse businesses and communities to move towards environmentally sustainable living was developed through Diverse London. This three year project completed in March 2008.

London is one of the world’s most diverse cities. We recognise that a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach does not effectively engage London’s diverse communities, and instead we tailor our message to individual ethnic groups in order to make sustainability relevant, attractive and easier to put in practice.

Key Achievements

We reached 19,000 people in 10 communities and faith groups across London through 3 pilot projects:

Promoting recycling to the Muslim population in Tower Hamlets through sermons, lectures and coffee mornings.
Promoting efficient water use to the Hindu community through talks at temples, and workshops and presentations at festivals.
Empowering and training culturally diverse community members in Lewisham to address environmental injustices.

A long term legacy of change was achieved by:

Supporting nearly 200 BAME community leaders and opinion formers through the Sustainability Champions Network.
Empowering and equipping Diverse London Ambassadors to reach out to community members and encourage behaviour change.
Providing innovative services, including environmental audits and workshops for SMEs in the green and ethical market through the Eco-Design Network.
