Sustainability Indicators in Action!
9th June 2008

This event brought together a mix of students and professionals to consider the question of how environmental stability can be measured and evaluated.  Participants gained experience using a new tool designed to assist with the evaluation of sustainability impact.

The Event
On Monday 9th June 2008, London Sustainability Exchange presented a new tool for evaluating the sustainability impact of projects at 'Sustainability Indicators in Action!'.  The event addressed the question of how the principles of sustainable development can and should be measured and evaluated.  A diverse mix of twenty students and professionals, drawn from London Students Towards Sustainability and the London Motivators Learning Network, attended the event supported by UrbanBuzz and London Councils.

Following a welcome from Samantha Heath, LSx Chief Executive, presentations by Graham Mallet of Thames Water and Tom Randall of Sponge Network addressed the integration of sustainability into London’s development objectives.

The Tool and Case Studies
The delegates then broke into small groups to learn first-hand how the tool works, making use of three very different case studies.  The tool compiles scaled answers to questions addressing numerous aspects of sustainability into an easily understandable and informative evaluation of a project’s overall sustainability.

The three projects used for case studies, which together demonstrated the flexibility of the tool, were Mapping Change for Sustainable Communities (MCSC) from Louise Francis, Evidencing Adaptable Sustainability (EASY) from Allan Brimicombe, and LSx’s own London Students Towards Sustainability from Gayle Burgess.  Thanks to all who attended this thought-provoking event!
