London’s successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was backed by a strong commitment to maximising the long-term legacy benefits. Not just in terms of jobs and skills, but a whole range of social and environmental improvements for Londoners. The challenge now is to turn the vision into a reality. Olympic delivery bodies LOCOG and ODA will not be able to do it alone. Harnessing tools and techniques already tested in the UK and abroad – from civic engagement techniques to tri-generation – will help. As will specification of clear and consistent performance targets in contracts issued by LDA and ODA.
