The London 2012 Changing Places Programme aims to help the communities surrounding the Olympic Park and other venues to secure lasting environmental and social benefits as a legacy of the Games.
The Olympic Park is set in a deprived area of London which suffers disproportionately from vandalism, litter and graffiti. In the lead up to the Games local communities will bear the brunt of the impacts of the construction work taking place in the park, creating a risk of local communities feeling disengaged from the Games. Changing Places has been introduced to tackle these concerns by focusing the effort of a wide range of stakeholder organisations and local volunteers.
The programme has the following objectives:
- inspire communities to improve public spaces – for example parks, open spaces and watersides;
- enable people to learn new interests and skills; and
- improve the quality of the local environment around Games-time venues and beyond, to create long-lasting change.
London Sustainability Exchange plays an active role on the stakeholder steering group helping to shape the programme.
