In January to April 2006, we worked with the food and drink sector in the London Boroughs of Barking & Dagenham and Newham. We helped SMEs in these areas begin to reap the benefits of greener practices, particularly in the areas of waste minimisation and recycling.
This early work helped us to test and hone our approach for Greener Food.
Findings
While there is a business case for reducing waste production, SMEs can often make proportionately greater savings by adopting energy efficiency and water conservation measures.
Recommendations
For policy makers - Fiscal incentives should be provided to encourage waste minimisation and recycling activities by SMEs.
For practitioners -Take a holistic approach to sustainability.
For researchers - Employ local people from the identified communities to undertake engagement work.
