Skanska assists Barts and The London NHS Trust with waste management
Skanska UK has been working on the Barts and The London NHS Trust development, helping the project team and supply chain come together and improve the programme’s sustainability performance.
A number of steps were taken to manage resource efficiency and mitigate waste production:
-
Pre-demolition waste audit and identification of items for salvage and recycling
-
Over 92% reuse and recycling of demolition wastes, resulting in more than ten and a half thousand tonnes of material being diverted from landfill
-
Development of a materials and waste tool, to monitor against the project target of 95% resource efficiency, per trade contractor and per material stream
-
Engaging with suppliers to design reusable packaging, rather than traditional cardboard and plastics, which end up as wastes.
Early consideration to additional time and cost implications from the planning phase onwards, along with plenty of ‘lead-in’ time, helped all concerned move smoothly to more efficient practices. Furthermore, the additional cost of reusable packaging was quickly offset with efficient use of resources.
