The report of the Brundtland Commission, Our Common Future, defined sustainable development in1987 as: "..development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
We use also our partner Forum for the Future's more positive definition of sustainable development:
‘A dynamic process which enables all people to realise their potential and improve their quality of life in ways which simultaneously protect and enhance the Earth’s life support systems.’
We believe that a joined up approach - sustainable development - is the only way to achieve a better quality of life for everybody.
The London Sustainable Development Commission has developed a Framework outlining how sustainable development could be interpreted in the London context. Click here to find out more about the Framework.
